17 Summer Things to Do with Your Kids in German

Try some of these ideas and help your children improve their German while having a great time!

  1. Bake cookies using a recipe in German (we have a great one here).
  2. Play Simon Says in German.
  3. Learn a new finger play (Fingerspiel).
  4. Write a letter to a German pen pal or relative.
  5. Do a crossword puzzle in German.
  6. Pick a letter of the alphabet and try to name as many German words as you can that start with that letter.
  7. Go to the zoo and name as many animals as possible. Talk about what they are doing (eating, sleeping, playing, etc.)
  8. Browse the Internet for fun German websites for kids.
  9. Write a story in German. Read it to a German-speaking friend or relative in Germany.
  10. Pick a city or landmark in Germany and plan a pretend trip there. Research via friends, family and Internet.
  11. Plant some sunflower seeds in a pot and watch them grow. Once it sprouts, measure the plant and keep a growth log in German.
  12. Play "I Spy" in German.
  13. Learn a tonguetwister.
  14. Fingerpaint and talk about the colors you use. Talk about how they change when mixed together.
  15. Make a calendar and talk about the months and days of the week. Hang it on the wall and write in the weather every day (heiß, windig, kalt, naß, usw.)
  16. Practice saying your address, telephone number, and birthday in German.
  17. Read a book!
